An experience in animation

I decided it was high time to start prototyping our stop-motion animation  program once again.  To be honest, I really wanted an excuse to play with the program myself.  I decided to do some stop-motion drawing with a dry-erase board.  The setup I built for the activitiy wasn’t pretty or professional, but my crude setup did not detract Thomas and Aiden, two first time visitors to the Museum.  .

I briefly explained the process of animation before they got started.  They each took turns drawing and taking pictures.  It was funny to watch them take on the roles of “director” and “animator”.

Stop-Motion is a tedious process, so this afforded me the opportunity to strike up conversation with the two boys and their dad. We talked about their favorite sports teams. I like the Buffalo Bills. They like the Red Sox. We even discussed ways of making the stop-motion prototype better. They really wanted to be able to save and share their work with other kids. Also, they wanted the ability to edit their project and delete certain pictures.

The experience was great for all of us involved. I was amazed that the two of them spent over an hour playing with the program. I’m glad that I got a chance to meet Aiden, Thomas and their dad. I hope that they were inspired to continue creating even after they left the Museum.

Aidan and Thomas had a great time at the Museum, and one o fthe highlights was this project. They told everyone about it, and it’s great having a link I can send around to show others their work. Kevin was great with the boys, and I very much appreciate the time that he took with them to create this.
