I was asked by a fellow teacher to create something that facilitates the exploration of gears. Gears can be tricky for children to understand, so I thought it was a great challenge!
After an extremely informal brainstorming session with Christian, I came up with this activity. I have to thank Christian for passing by during the day and suggesting that I use tacks and foam. The gears were donated by someone, the foam was left over from another project, and the wood was mainly scrap. It is nice to use scrap materials when you are prototyping so you can be cost effective.
The open-ended nature of this project allows for some great discovery and exploration. I eventually added a motorized gear to the piece. This unnamed gear exploration table is a lot of fun to explore. Keep it simple and you will get results.
