I’m not an expert at anything, but I am really good at asking questions.
I wanted to make a JEDI KNIGHT robe for Halloween. Problem: I have never sewn anything this big or complex before. Thankfully, I was able to ask Rebecca, a fellow Teaching Artist, and Lea, one of our interns, for help. They showed me the importance of sketching your project before you do anything. It is important to visualize the pieces and parts of your project before you begin building. They did a great job of coaching me along the way.
This enormous project taught me the importance of pins, hemming, measuring with string, making paper templates, and seam rippers. A sewing project is no different from the other projects that I’ve worked on, but it was intimidating since I am not that familiar with this type of sewing. Being afraid of unfamiliar tools and techniques is common, but it’s important to never be afraid to ask for help.
Thanks again to Rebecca and Lea for being such amazing teachers.
