Every month we have a theme that helps us to decide on new activities for MAKESHOP. We spent the month of December making projects and exploring materials that GLOW. We had glow-in-the-dark fabric, UV LEDs, lots of holiday lights, light painting, and some glow-in-the-dark paint. I had the brilliant idea to combine some of the GLOW activities with a ShopBot (what we call basically anything with a motor attached to it).
I attached a vibrating motor to the empty can of glow-in-the-dark paint. I then built some tiny little feet out of UV LEDs (which react with any surface that is coated in the glow-in-the-dark paint). I took my little creation, along with a piece of cardboard to the darkest area in the Museum, the Shadow Room (which is located in our Attic exhibit). The results of the bot moving around on the cardboard in the dark were really cool to see. The creations in MAKESHOP don’t necessarily need to be used only in MAKESHOP, but can be used in other parts of the Museum as well.
This was a really fun project to build and explore. I took a picture of the “GlowBot” using the light painting settings on one of our cameras. The above picture is the result of that experiment. The entire GLOW themed month of December was really fun. This glow-in-the-dark-bot was one of many awesome creations.
