Camp MAKESHOP: 3D Modeling & Laser Cutting

Friday in Camp MAKESHOP was bounded only by imagination because all our work started in virtual spaces. Our goal was to understand how to create objects of our design and desire using some of the schmanciest tools in the MAKESHOP, namely the solidoodle 3D printer and the laser cutter. How do you narrow it down when there are no limits? We played a game to start. First you had to make a nickname consisting of a word t

Chain Reaction Machine

A couple of Saturdays ago we experimented with chain reactions in the workshop in MAKSEHOP. Dan, one of our MAKESHOP Educators, and I  spent the entire day building and adding to our chain reaction machine with any visitor who wanted to participate. We built our machine out of recycled materials, tape and some of our circuit blocks. Essentially our chain reaction machine was a series of ramps and ball that either kno

Things in the Laser Cutter

I love our laser cutter. It’s a machine that uses a power beam of energy to burn through things. How cool is that?! The only thing I love more than the laser cutter (sorry, loom, you’ve been temporarily replaced) is putting odd things into the laser cutter. Cookies Nilla Wafers work really nicely, because the burned design shows up well against the light-colored cookie. Wood (Painted) Wood isn’t a v

A Practical Laser Cutter Project

I had the opportunity to use our laser cutter to create something practical for a change. We usually use our laser cutter to experiment with visitors and demonstrate the use of a laser to cut or etch different materials. I was asked to create this project for Tula Organic Salon and Spa. They wanted to laser cut a stencil so that they could paint a bathroom sign for their shop. I suggested that we could use the laser

Another Youth MAKE Night…

We held another Youth MakeNight for some of our teenage visitors a couple of weeks ago.  These events are so much fun.  As staff, we get to interact with an older demographic of children, and the group of teenagers get to visit the Museum without their parents. We offered several different activities for the kids (sewing, pinball, circuits, etc.) and as usual, the kids created some activities of their own…Like

Laser cutting for anyone

Anyone can do it… A typical day at work in MAKESHOP can be hard to predict.  A couple of days ago, I was taught how to use a laser cutter. An amazing team of students from Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center spent an entire semester developing an iPad app to allow someone like me to do something like use a laser cutter. Some days I deal with a loom, and other days I deal with lase
