Pirates, Catapults, and Pedal Carts!

We’re working on an exciting new project at MAKESHOP: A Catapult! Normally we don’t make war machines, but this one has been repurposed for FUN. Our design is based on the trebuchet, a sling-based counterweight-powered type of catapult originally invented in the 11th century. We’re building this crazy thing to throw the first pitch for the Pirates game on September 1st! Another Youth MAKE Night…

We held another Youth MakeNight for some of our teenage visitors a couple of weeks ago.  These events are so much fun.  As staff, we get to interact with an older demographic of children, and the group of teenagers get to visit the Museum without their parents. We offered several different activities for the kids (sewing, pinball, circuits, etc.) and as usual, the kids created some activities of their own…Like

We set up the workshop space as a landscape (wit

MAKEnight, April 4

MAKEnight is an amazing event held at the Museum.  It is an after-hours event that lets adults (and only adults) play and explore in the Museum.  The event has been a huge success over the past couple of months.  We decided to make this latest MAKEnight a little bit different from the others. Typically, we only have attendees explore and create in MAKESHOP and STUDIO.  This time, we opened the entire first floor of t

A Week in MAKESHOP (in two minutes)

MAKESHOP is not a static exhibit.  It changes to accommodate a variety of activities and programs, such as schools groups, guest makers, play-testing, meetings, photo shoots, themed activities, etc.  Tables get moved, messes are made (and cleaned up), things are broken (and fixed), and everyone has fun. We made a time-lapse video of the workshop side of MAKESHOP over the span of an entire week.  We borrowed a special
