A Miniature MAKESHOP

We recently explored scale and perspective as a theme in MAKESHOP.  One of our activities was to create a tiny version of the MAKESHOP exhibit.  I built a small diorama of the room and then let other educators and visitors add to the space.  There are some very recognizable objects in MAKESHOP.  It was a real challenge building tiny, tiny versions of those objects out of random recycled materials. Little red chair wi

Pterodactyls, Superheroes and Light Houses…

Sometimes we end up with a theme within a theme in MAKESHOP.  In this case, our theme was “MAKESBURGH” (our community created cardboard city).  Within that theme emerged some other strange trends.  For some reason, the skies of MAKESBURGH became plagued with pterodactyls.  One young, imaginative visitor came up with an entire superhero to help keep MAKESBURGH safe.   CAT CREATURE!…who defends t

Sharks in MAKESHOP

I’ve noticed an interesting theme in the past few stop-motion animations made in MAKESHOP.  Apparently, a couple of the paper shadow puppets from our programming in the month of February have made there way over to the animation station.  There is a cut out of a shark with a movable mouth that has become the star of our stop-motion animations.  The supporting cast seems to stay the same as well.  Below are seve

Ready to Glow!

Every month we have a different theme, putting in activities that are new and different. December’s theme is GLOW. We’re preparing a whole lot of new activities like blacklight drawing and glowing putty, and keeping in some favorites like light painting and stop motion!  We might even have real glowing mushrooms (proven non-toxic non-poisonous.) There will also be GLOW activities in the STUDIO, as well as

Light Painting Tests

Each month, our staff decides on a theme to help us decide what projects and activities we want to offer to our visitors. Our November theme is “Time” and we’ve been messing around in the shop, brainstorming some fun, open-ended activities that emphasize the idea of time passing. We knew we wanted to do some light painting, so we started playing with our cameras, moving bright lights around in front
